Explore Mykonos with Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Mykonos is experiencing its day in the sun, no pun intended.

While the idyllic Greek island has always been a perennial choice for holiday and sun seekers alike, Mykonos has become one of the world’s hottest destinations, mainly in part to an influx of new restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and fashionable boutiques that dot the already chic landscape. The island became famous with the visit of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly and 60s icon Brigitte Bardot, and today expect to see a celebrity sighting or two (such as Mariah Carey or Leo DiCaprio) as it’s still a mainstay for the international jet set.

Named from the Greek God Apollos grandson Mykons, the cosmopolitan “Island of the Winds” offers a little something for everyone. The beaches – 25 in all – are considered to be some of the finest in the world due to its pristine white sands and crystal turquoise blue Aegean waters. One of the largest and the longest, Elia Beach is a favorite for windsurfing, snorkeling and sailing with hidden coves just waiting to be explored.

No visit to the island would be complete without seeing the tiny picturesque capital of Hora (also known as Mykonos Town). Take in the views of the iconic Cycladic architecture that is synonymous with Mykonos via the Made in MykonosFREE Unlimited Shore Excursion. Characterized by bougainvillea-lined cobblestone streets designed in a labyrinth and whitewashed cubic style houses, the style originated in the Medieval era to keep pirates at bay with streets designed to confuse the perpetrators and houses surrounded by large walls. The iconic and easily recognizable blue domed churches are symbolic of Greece’s blue sky and the white foam of the Aegean Sea. And be sure to check out Matogianni, the island’s best-known (and busiest) alleyway for luxury fashion.

The Guided Stroll Through Mykonos tour depicts the island’s past and present with a stop at the Mykonian Archaeological Museum that houses artifacts from the sacred island of Delos dating back to 25 BC. Located at the center of the Cyclades archipelago near Mykonos, the holy area is known as one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece with incredible monuments of Greek mythological history. Legend notes the tiny island is the birthplace of Apollo (Greek God of music and light) and Artemis (Greek Goddess of wilderness and the hunt) and worth a day trip just to explore the ancient ruins along with some of the best views of the surrounding islands. Declared a World Heritage Site, the ruins are wonderfully preserved, offering a glimpse of an ancient civilization.

Considered one of the most beautiful places on the island, the historic neighborhood of Little Venice lives up to its Italian namesake in appeal. A bustle of shops, bars and majestic seaside homes that comprise the area can best be seen on the Mykonos and Monastery island tour. Also designed in a maze of streets, be sure to visit the windmills (characterized by their pointed wooden roofs with only seven left in working condition) enjoy a cocktail or two and catch the incredible sunset.
