Mykonos is experiencing its day in the sun, no pun intended.
While the idyllic Greek island has always been a perennial choice for holiday and sun seekers alike, Mykonos has become one of the world’s hottest destinations, mainly in part to an influx of new restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and fashionable boutiques that dot the already chic landscape. The island became famous with the visit of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly and 60s icon Brigitte Bardot, and today expect to see a celebrity sighting or two (such as Mariah Carey or Leo DiCaprio) as it’s still a mainstay for the international jet set.
Named from the Greek God Apollos grandson Mykons, the cosmopolitan “Island of the Winds” offers a little something for everyone. The beaches – 25 in all – are considered to be some of the finest in the world due to its pristine white sands and crystal turquoise blue Aegean waters. One of the largest and the longest, Elia Beach is a favorite for windsurfing, snorkeling and sailing with hidden coves just waiting to be explored.
No visit to the island would be complete without seeing the tiny picturesque capital of Hora (also known as Mykonos Town). Considered one of the most beautiful places on the island, the historic neighborhood of Little Venice lives up to its Italian namesake in appeal.
